Author Interview: Chris Sav

Tell us a little bit about yourself as an artist/writer:

I’m an illustrator, writer and performer interested in exploring how the combination of horror and humour can critique certain aspects of everyday life. I’ve produced illustrations for various mental health charities, and I have exhibited/performed my artwork across the UK and Europe. My songs about vegetables have inexplicably been played on BBC 6 Music. I’m currently working on a death metal/folk concept album about a cursed loaf of bread. 

What do you hope the readers get from your piece?

I’d love for them to be grossed/creeped out by the imagery in it, but ultimately I hope they find it amusing and are able to relate in some way. 

What are the themes you are exploring?

I’m interested in exploring the banal horrors of everyday life, and what kind of monsters these might manifest as. 

I’m particularly interested in the idea bathos - a kind of fall from the sublime to the ridiculous - in this case, how a creature of abject horror can transform into something absurdly mundane (whilst still retaining an essence of horror). 

What aspect of the modern world is your piece commenting/reflecting on?

The ordeal of renting and housing in the UK, alongside the anxiety involved in interacting with estate agents. Also the liminal slump after consuming a supermarket meal deal. 

If you were a cryptid or folkloric creature, which one would you be and why?

I would be a tsukumogami - they are possessed household objects in Japanese folklore that cause mischief around the house. I think I’d like to be one of those really specific/useless kitchen utensils like a banana slicer, just going around smearing mashed banana on everything.
